What is contraception?
According to statistics, the population of the world has reached close to 800 crores and this figure is continuously increasing. On one hand the population is increasing while on the other hand the resources available to us are decreasing. In such a situation, population control is very important so that the problems caused by population explosion can be avoided in future. Population growth, which is now being defined by the term population explosion, can be reduced with the help of contraception. In the present article, a lot of information has been given about contraception, in which there are special types of contraception.

What is contraception?

Contraception, also known as birth control, is a method of preventing pregnancy that uses medications, devices, or surgery. There are several ways to prevent pregnancy, some of which are reversible, while others are permanent. Contraceptives not only prevent the birth of an unwanted child but also protect against the risk of sexually transmitted infections and diseases.

Do contraceptives prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

Only condoms and internal condoms provide protection against STIs as well as pregnancy. Therefore, every time you have sex, you should use a condom (new every time) properly to avoid STIs and unwanted pregnancy. Contraceptive methods other than condoms only protect against pregnancy, not infection.

How many methods of contraception are there?

Following are 15 methods which are used as contraception:-

  2. Combined pill
  3. Condom (female)
  4. Condom (male)
  5. Contraceptive implant

  9. Intrauterine device (IUD)

There are 2 permanent methods of contraception:

  1. Female sterilization
  2. Male sterilization (vasectomy)

Apart from these methods, you can also prevent pregnancy with the help of oral sex and anal sex.

What is emergency contraception? What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception is not a regular method of birth control. But it can be used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or if a condom breaks. It has the following two types:-

  • Copper IUD: This is a small, T-shaped device that a doctor inserts into a woman’s body within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse.
  • Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) are hormonal pills that a woman takes as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. These medicines do not prevent pregnancy.

What is the situation in India regarding contraception?

Like other countries, contraceptive methods are easily accessible to people in India too. But contraceptive services here are largely confidential. If you are 16 years old then you are considered mature to avail contraceptive services. But the demand for contraception is very low in India because people are shy to talk about it. Not only this, people also feel hesitant in buying condoms. There is only one basic reason behind this “less information related to sex”.

In India, children are not given correct information related to sex at the right age, due to which they always feel hesitant in talking about this subject and then become vulnerable to sex-related diseases. Not only this, women also have more information about taking contraceptive medicines, due to which they may have to face many serious diseases, of which infertility is the most serious problem. There are two types of contraceptive pills taken by women, one is normal and the other is emergency. Due to lack of information, women often use emergency contraceptives due to which they have to face serious side effects. Therefore, one should never take any kind of medicine without doctor’s advice.
